When I created this blog and was thinking about the content of my posts, designers tribute was one of the hottest topics. Starting one today, the first and my all time favourite would of course be about Sonia Rykiel. So all of you who don't or do know her let's talk a bit about her marvellous career. Sonia Rykiel is a french self-taught fashion designer born in the 30's. Known as the queen of knits, she was at first a window dresser and then worked as a designer at her husband's famous boutique 'Laura'. Her first garment was a dress that she made while she was pregnant. Later, the red-haired designer, forms her namesake company, opens her first shop and stands out with a more personal rhythm. She has already created her first lace-front braless dress, promotes layer look, popularizes rainbow stripes, vintage dresses and cullotes. In 1974 she creates the 'demode' (undone) look, exposing seams and unhemming hems, simply making clothes inside out. She was also the first designer that printed words on her sweaters. Her colours usually were beige, dark blue, grey and charcoal. As she said at Vogue, the key to her collections is sensuality. As the years went by she kept her own personal style and developted it without losing her individuality and proved that knitwear can follow any trend. Along with her friend Malcom McLaren made the song 'Who the hell is Sonia Rykiel', a track of his album 'Paris' (listen to it here). She has created childrens clothing, introduced her shoes and accessories at 1992, collaborated with H&M for an underwear collection and as all multitalented personalities wrote childrens and fashion books. She's the only designer who's models in catwalk are always expressive and smiling, as she says: the woman in the catwalk is a novel character (that's what I love about her). Today's president of the company is her daughter Natalie Rykiel as Sonia is in her 80's but she is still its creative head. Sonia Rykiel remains an object of fascination decades into her career. A reamarkable person and designer who has left her mark into fashion industry for good! I'm sure pictures above will make you see that yourselves :))) Have a great rain-less weekend my readers!!! Kisses to all
Fashionably yours
